On the road....

I'm sitting at a rest stop somewhere in Arizona...and I realized....I should tell my friends there won't be a link love or soulful Sunday this weekend.

I just couldn't pull it all together!

In the meantime feel free to follow along on Instagram or Twitter. I'm hashtaging the trip and subsequent California adventures as #lookingforaship - follow along!

Mettle Mission : Day Sixty Two

Today I'm waking up in Tucson, Arizona after watching the sunset in Nowheres-Ville New Mexico.

Lets see see where the road leads me!  I've resigned myself to the fact I can't do the trip in two days. I guess I have time to stop and smell the flowers!

I'm channeling:  Cool, Calm, Collected as I get back on I-10.

I cant any wait to share my pictures from this trip!!

Mettle Mission :: Day Sixty

I picked this quote today for the simple fact that it contains the words 'a paved road' and I am hitting said paved road.

Although I will admit here that my trip might get delayed because I had a 'not-so-adult-moment' yesterday late afternoon where I realized my vehicle registration and safety inspection had expired and figure I should take care of that before hitting the road.....my bad.

Vague Post

this photo doesn't have much to do with anything other than there is a ship...carrying ships...and I'm looking for one...

You know how people write these super vague posts on Facebook or Twitter or leave a super vague comment on an Instagram photo?  I'm about to do that to you...

I'm leaving first thing tomorrow for California where I'll be 'looking for a ship'.

I'm packing my car with my sea bag, and any item required for a lengthy stint away from home base.  I'm planning on a worst case scenario of one month before walking up a gangway somewhere but, I'm crossing my fingers (like, crossing them hard) that something pops up before then.

This might be considered putting all my happiness eggs in one basket - or it could be considered taking a risk with happiness in mind.  The jury is still out.

If you want to better understand what I'm up to I can't recommend the book Looking For A Ship enough.  This book is about one of my Captains at Maine Maritime Academy and his hunt for a ship - and then later about his time aboard the vessel.  It's great and I actually just cracked it open again!

If you'd like more specifics about what I'm up to (because of course there's more to the story) drop me a line and I'll shoot you a personal email!  I'm really just trying hard to not put all my work business out into the interwebz!  Thanks for your understanding.

Mettle Mission :: Day Fifty Nine

This past week was my hardest week.  Particularly Friday.  I cried a lot (and got super emo on social media....my bad...).

Then I got a text message from a cousin.  This cousin and I don't stay in super good touch.  He works out in the freakin' boondocks of Alberta, Canada and has a lifestyle that is similar to mine.  He does a few weeks on and off from his home in British Columbia.  Anyways, I hadn't told him that I'd lost my ship.  Because he knows (and relates better than others) his first question was, 'how long have you been home?' I answered, '120 days' he quickly responded with, 'do you need some cash?'.

You guys.  I cried (okay fine, I had been crying all day anyways...but still...).

Not too long later (that same day), Girl Cousin (who I keep in touch with a lot) sent me a text, 'whats with all the crying?'.  She had seen my super emo social media moment.  Then she talked me off the proverbial ledge offering me moral support from afar and cheering me on.

Here's where I'm going with this.  You don't know who's got your back until you need someone to get your back.  (just fyi, typing that made me cry...)

My family's got my back - and it feels pretty awesome.

Ohana means family, family means nobody gets left behind.

How's that for a mettle maker?!  In my book, it's the best kind of mettle maker.
