Aloha Friday v13 :: The legend of Akaka Falls

Darlene Ahuna is one of my all time favorite singers.  She sang at Hilo High while I was there - she performs in town and is just so much fun to watch - because she's just so damn good.  She's got this classic Hawaiian Style falsetto that just kills it live.  One of her most requested songs (maybe I'm making this up) is Akaka Falls.  I love the song because a) I grew up in Honomu and b) I played at Akaka Falls a lot.

The legend of Akaka Falls tells the story of a young warrior chief named Akaka.  He was married to a lovely lady but had two sweethearts on the side named Lehua and Maile.  While his wife was away visiting her parents in Hilo Akaka would stray.  One sweetheart lived on the north side of the gulch and the other sweetheart lived on the south side of the gulch.  While he was perched up high in the gulch looking longingly at his two sweethearts huts his wife returned home unexpectedly and he fled back to his own hut.  He was very remorseful, and full of shame, so he ran away from home with his faithful little dog.  He stood at the top of the bluff and gave one last look to his sweethearts huts and then flew himself off the top of the bluff towards the ocean.  His little dog hesitated and became a jagged rock at the top of the bluff.  His wife was quick on his heels and followed him to tell him that it was alright and she forgave him but was too late.  She sobbed uncontrollably for him while calling his name and turned to stone at the top of the bluff while her tears created a waterfall.  Further down the gulch his sweethearts heard of his demise and they cried and cried for him two creating two more waterfalls.

I love that in this video Darlene gives a shoutout to the village of Honomu.

clearly, someones home video but great nonetheless.

Aloha Friday v10 // Hilo Rain

You know how the thing you love the most can also be the thing you love least?  In Hilo that is often times the rain....

Hilo is lush, green & steamy.

Hilo is not a tourist destination.

Hilo is the windward side of the island.

Hilo is not full of umbrellas - if its raining wait a second and then run to your car.

Hilo gets a fair amount of power from hydroelectricity - we have the states largest hydro plant!

Hilo is Hilo because of the rain.

When you grow up in Hilo the rain is something you can really enjoy.  It doesn't slow down your day.  If you're at a concert and it rains - you just keep dancing.  You don't dress for the rain.  You don't have a raincoat.  It's just a part of life.

This song by Kapena is one of my ultimate favorites because it just perfectly captures the essence of Hilo Rain.

APPY ALOHA FRIDAY!!!

Aloha Friday v9

Last week we went super classic and this week we're going super modern.

In Aloha Friday v3 I shared a favorite song by Anuhea.  She is one of my absolute favorites.

Kimie Miner is of the same echelon.  She's a totally classy chick from Hawaii.  What's not to love about that?!

Of course this video isn't the best quality but, it still provides a great listen.

I think this is my new theme song.

Aloha Friday v8

When I was a little girl my Dad was really into Slack Key Guitar.  To be fair, most people in Hawaii are into Slack Key.  We used to go to the annual Slack Key Guitar Festival in Hilo every year.  Lets be clear, I was bored out of my mind, I was a little kid a guitar festival.  That being said, I have a crystal clear memory of Sonny Chillingworth performing.  He just seemed like 'the real deal'.  Old Hawaii Charm.

Slack Key Guitar originated in Hawaii - the original phrase was:  ki ho'alu (translation- loosen the tuning key).  You can grab the specifics from the link above but basically, you de-tune the guitar.

You would never guess but Hawaii (and specifically Hawaii Island where I'm from) is full of cowboys.  We at one time had the United State's largest privately owned ranch (up until just a few years ago!) - Mexican Cowboys brought their skills to the Islands along with their guitars and music.  Paniolo - a Hawaiian Cowboy sounds an awful lot like 'espanioles'.  The Hawaiians ended up taking what they learned from the Paniolo's and then developing their own style.

Sonny Chillingworth is definitely one of my favorites but, this song can't be played without connecting a few more dots.

Hi'ilawe was written by Gabby Pahinui (in fact it was Gabby's first recording) a legend.  I'm sure you've all heard the Israel Kamakawiwo'ole song Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World - you know in the beginning when he says, 'kay, this one's for Gabby' - that is Gabby Pahinui!  He influenced so many Hawaiian Artists.

This is old school Chillingworth.  I hope you enjoy!

A true Slack Key standard closely associated with Sonny's beloved friend and frequent playing companion, Pops Gabby Pahinui (1921-1980), Hi'ilawe poetically discusses a love affair that took place in the beautiful Waipi'o Valley on the Big Island of Hawai'i.

Aloha Friday v7

This is actually my favorite song of all times. It's the only Hawaiian song that I've learned the hula for and, strangely enough, it's the only song I've told my Mom to at at my funeral in a worst case scenario.

If I'm feeling uncomfortable - like I'm in a dark cargo hold or am walking in the ships tunnels - and I don't have my iPod to drown out the creaks and groans - I'm probably singing this song out loud.

This version is sung by a duo called Hapa. Their version is the first one I heard and holds fast as my favorite.

Please note:  because I'm on the ship I haven't actually watched this video. Hope it's okay!

Aloha Friday v6 + Five Things

...It's Aloha Friday...no work till Monday...da doobie doo da doobie doobie doobie doo....

Hilo Town & Rainbow

Maybe you were hoping for a song instead of a rainbow over Hilo town?  Yes?  (Click here for the original Aloha Friday song....cause it's the best one ever!)

Now let's do what the rest of the internet does on Friday - list Five Things!

1.  Jet.Lag.  I have never been struck so hard by Jet Lag!  I have felt like a walking zombie the last few days and really only just feel like I'm perking up.  This might be the perfect meme.

2.  I'm pretty sure my friends have been rolling their eyes about my 'big adventure'...I'm also pretty sure this New York Times article confirms it.

3.  One of the Kathmandu Girls had these Lululemon pants - and then everyone else went home and bought them - and love them - I'm having serious FOMO and think I might need to acquire some.

4.  I went to Central Kitchen for dinner this week.  It really, really deserves a post of its own.  So really, I only told you that to brag because dude, dinner was delicious.

5.  I kind of want to apologize for not blogging in a while and, I kind of want to promise to jump on the band wagon soon but them I'm pretty sure this hilarious article would have my name in it.

Have a Fabulous Weekend Nautie Friends!!!!!
