Another note on the weirdness....

Well, I think it's official. My old theme is kaput.  I'm really liking the new theme - feel free to give some feedback!  I uploaded some photos today so that I can change the header around when I feel like it....which I think is kind of fun.  In the spirit of being back at work I opted for maximum nautical impact and chose a shot of my ship.  Why not?!

Weird...

Something weird is going on with the site - some of you may have noticed that some of my posts were showing up in the sidebar - since I'm not much of a tech guru I have no idea how to fix it!  Not knowing how to fix things sometimes makes change inevitable hence the new theme. I was soooo sad to see a new look for nautiemermate!  I almost left things disfunctional because I had such an attachment to the old look.  I actually felt surprised by my nostalgia!  Then my mood started to shift - the more I see the new look the more I like it!

Random Tidbits

Nautie Friends, as your comments rolled in yesterday I laughed and laughed and laughed!  I made it through the day with my ill-fitting nylons and today opted for pants!

Today is my last day in the office.  I have very mixed feelings about leaving.  I'm excited to go back to sea.  I'm excited to get back to Maine and see some friends.  I'm looking forward to having a dresser and laundry facilities.  I'm even looking forward to some snow and cold (that will last for all of five minutes-scraping my windows will remind me a temperate climate isn't too bad).  BUT.  I'm sad to leave the office!  I'm sad that I won't be able to hang out with friends on weekends.  I'm sad that I will be eating ships food soon.  I'm sad that I won't be able to enjoy a glass of wine in the evenings.  C'est la vie.

There is a twelve hour drive in my not so distant future.  I'm busy making preparations for a car ride.  Healthy snacks, coffee canisters, comfortable outfit, good music, sunglasses, cell phone and ear bud all charged up.  My packing hasn't yet commenced so that is looming over my head.

If you don't hear from me in a few days it's because I'm scrambling around or driving :)  Hopefully, it's both!  (However, I think you'll hear from me...)

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

It is not happy people who are thankful; It is thankful people who are happy.  -Unknown.

I'm thankful that I'm from a place where you can watch lovely ladies dancing hula, spend a day on a beach with your Mom and not see another soul, and buy anthuriums for 2 dollars a bunch.

I'm thankful that I survived Florida (it wasn't the beaches that required surviving - it was the stability)...and that I now hold an unlimited tonnage Chief Officers license!  Yippee!

I'm thankful that I have friends who know how to put lobsters to sleep and love bonfires and as much as I do!

I'm thankful for my job - and the glorious sunrises - they'll never get old (I'm also thankful that I haven't hit a fishing boat).

I'm thankful for fall leaves, fresh cider and L.L.Bean boots.

I'm especially thankful for my family.  Thank you for cutting down my bananas, going out for lunch on my birthday and sitting outside in the pouring rain, and having crazy dogs who like to kiss me awake in the morning when I visit.

I'm also sill thankful for everything I was thankful for last year!

What are all of you thankful for?!

In the midst of the gloom...

In the midst of yesterdays gloom I ran across a post on facebook - it was a link posted by a friend. This is a youtube video of two of Hilo's most beloved citizens.  The Zane's.  While they have no idea who I am I of course know who they are and have followed their work / designs.

They are completely responsible for my favorite Hawaiian fashion designs.  Sig Zane of Hilo.  Whenever I can buy my Father and Aloha Shirt - this is where I go.  Whenever I want a comfortable organic cotton shirt - this is where I go.  Whenever I'm home in Hilo and want a taste of tropical elegance - this is where I go.

In the video they (father and son team) speak of their inspiration - Moku o Keawe - The Island of Hawaii.

I realize that a lot of this video will go over most of your heads (no offense)....but what won't go over your heads is the passion these gentlemen feel for their home and their roots.  I think that is something that most of us can relate to.

When I watched this yesterday I felt like I had been given a shot of home in the arm.  In addition to your lovely comments on friendship it was exactly what the doctor ordered.

Mahalo.

Dear Nautie Friends, I was incredibly moved by your comments yesterday.  I was clearly feeling a bit glum while some residual gloom may reside I'm feeling much better today.  I attribute my brighter spirits to your amazing messages.

They reinforced what I've known all along...I'm incredibly blessed.

You know what's as amazing as having great friends?  Having family you consider friends and friends you consider family.

Mahalo nui loa (thank you very much)!

A me ke aloha pumehana (with warmest affection),

Megan the Nautie Mermate
