Dolphins at Sunrise

A few mornings ago, there were dolphins everywhere.  They were lazy dolphins...coming to the surface very slowly showing a little fin and then dipping back down just below the surface of the water.

I tried so hard to take pictures of them!  It was nearly impossible!  There was no rhyme or reason to how they were coming to the surface - or where they'd come next.  I just had to be patient - point and shoot - and hope things were fairly straight!

There is something so soothing about watching dolphins move about.  Even when they aren't being frisky and playful it's hard to take your eyes off of them.  I was so surprised to see dolphins this far north - and I wondered if they were moving slowly to conserve energy and body heat....the water temperature is about 7 degrees Celsius.

It was a treat.

Enjoy some photos of a packed anchorage, some sunrise shots and dolphin 'puddles'!

'She'll wait for ya' Clarified....

Nautie Friends! Don't worry!  I don't wait for my shipmates outside whorehouses!

I got several concerned emails so I figured I should clarify a few things....

a) While aboard the vessel I work very hard to maintain my professionalism.  This isn't always easy because I have a touch of the crazy.  I laugh at inappropriate things, I have a bit of a temper, and I like to get to know my shipmates.  That being said, I feel quite confident that my watchstanders (and fellow officers) know that they can count on me to do my best as well, trust that I will provide reliable information and in general have good judgement.  I work at being fair and firm.

b) I sensor 90% of what occurs aboard my ship.  I do this for several reasons; I think it's important to maintain the anonimity of my shipmates; I think it is best for operational security if I don't divulge too much information; and lastly, most of it is far too crass!  Honestly, I knew at the time that this conversation might be a tad too risque for the blog - but I went for it because I have a sick sense of humor and thought it was funny.

c) I don't really wait for my shipmates outside of whorehouses.  I could probably tell you some crazy stories (I should probably rephrase that as can not could...) but, I will save them for later.

d) When Travel Buddy and I hit the town we don't go to whorehouses.  I think Travel Buddy is waaaay too smart to suggest that I wait for him while he visits a painted lady.

So there you have it.  I'm respectably unrespectable!

On a sidenote....Rhiannon, I have the nicest room I've ever had.  I should probably take pictures of it to show you guys.  My room here is so far out of the norm it's not even funny!  I have a stateroom with a dayroom attached.  When you walk into my room you are in a 'sitting area' which is called a day room.  I have a desk, a lounge area (sofa with chairs) and a chart table (this was built by a previous second mate so He could work in the room).  The bedroom comes off the dayroom.  It's a bedroom - with attached bath.  I have a queen size bed (seriously, most racks on ships are smaller than a twin!) and a dressor.  It's quite luxurious for a Second Mate.  My room here is bigger than the Captains quarters of my last ship!  On most vessels people don't share rooms.  Sometimes, unlicensed will have to share a room but even that is becoming more rare.  I've never heard of a ship where officers had to share.  (I guess a tugboat or sailing vessel would be the exception to that rule.)

Where are your photos?!

Ummm....still on my camera?  I know!  I know!  But honestly?  My days haven't had too many 'down moments' of late.

Our vessel received orders to load in the Ukraine.  With a split discharge in unspecified ports.  You all know what that means......I'm scrambling! The good news is that I've been scrambling for a few days now and I see light at the end of the tunnel!

I wish I could tell you guys a whole bunch of exciting things but for the most part my life has consisted of building passage plans and putting them on the charts....and eating and sleeping.

Please excuse the neglect.  Love will be heading your way shortly!

Have a Nautie Presidents' Day!

I'm technically writing this a day late....the good news is that due to me being on the other side of the world it's still Presidents' Day for some of you! I'm not sure if I've ever celebrated Presidents' Day before - and we most assuredly do not celebrate it aboard, either.  We do however get holiday pay.  (Holiday pay means I get paid twice for the same day.)  That's certainly cause for celebration!

I've been meaning to share a link with you Nautie Folk for quite some time - I read The Old Salt Blog almost everyday.  Love it.  It has a very wide maritime focus - meaning I read about sailing ships as well as motor vessels trading commercially - and sometimes I even read about sailing ships trading commercially.  It keeps me current and gives me some insight.

Yesterday (or Today) there was a post about George Washington and his fleet of armed schooners that kicked some major ass.  It's a perfect nautie Presidents' Day post.  Enjoy!

*Also, I totally had to google 'Presidents' Day' to punctuate correctly!

Nautie Galentines!

I read a post today over at It's like I'm....mmmagic! in which Brandy pays tribute to all her favorite ladies.  On a day rife with chocolates and roses I think this is a grreaat idea!  So of course, I'm going to copy her and pay tribute to my favorite ladies too! I've known for years that I'm extraordinarily blessed to have so many lovely ladies in my life.  In fact, I think it's abnormal to have such amazing family, friends, and mentors!  I don't stay in the best contact with all of them - and you know what?  It's okay!  Why?  Because when we do see eachother we can pick up exactly where we left off.  If you ask me that's how you know people are special!

I have a family full of amazing women.  Seriously kick ass chicks that have faith in me, have pushed me, and have supported me when I'm down.  I have a group of Aunties who have gone so far above and beyond the required Aunt-like duties that it is ridiculous.  Grateful doesn't begin to cover it - honored, flattered and blessed.  Truly blessed.  I also have amazing cousins.  Crazy cool chicas.

My friends - where to begin?  My friends aren't only smart, kind, funny, and amazingly adventurous - they're gorgeous!  When I was in High School I actually got into an 'almost fight' because this girl overhead me say in Science class that I thought my friends were the prettiest girls in school.....but, it was true!  My friends are freakin' gorgeous!  If I'm absolutely honest I think having such gorgeous friends probably gave me a complex about my own looks.  My point is this:  I'm lucky to have so many friends.  I'm also lucky that they know I'm a turd ball who doesn't keep in touch and love me anyways.

I also have a church full of the cutest little Japanese ladies.  While I tower above them at a mighty 5'2" these ladies are nonetheless forces to be reckoned with and, they raised me up.  Do you know why I always take a gift when I go to someones house?  Because they taught me the importance of omiyage.  Do you know why my old plastic shopping bags are neatly stowed in a drawer?  Because they taught me how to fold them into perfect triangles.  Do you know why I can make kick ass floral arrangements?  Because I've been watching them make ikebana my whole life.

While this blog is supposed to be 'mostly anonymous' I feel compelled to send a few shout outs to the Nautie Gals in my life.  Here goes....
